CITY & FJORD AUTUMN/WINTER BREAKS
The fjords are thought to be a summer destination but anybody that knows Norway recognises that each season brings something special to this region. Late summer gives way to stunning autumnal colours and moody atmospheric mountains, taking Scandinavians by the hand and leading them into classic winter ‘hygge’.
Tourism dies down because outside of Norway the days are perceived as dark but certainly below the Arctic Circle, although shorter in length, the days are illuminated by an incredible ‘blue’ light which creates a surreal and peaceful feel.
Norwegian songwriter, Ane Brun writes about the Scandinavian seasons “The relief of spring, intoxication of summer rain, the clearness of fall, how winter makes me reconsider it all” and there is something truly magical and reflective about Norwegian wintertime.
Taking a short break between Bergen and the fjords is a spectacular way to experience this. The cosiness of Bergen Bryggen; its small shops, candle lights, gingerbread and winter warming teas can be coupled and contrasted with a Norway in a Nutshell Tour. Stay a night or two in the iconic Fretheim Hotel with its fabulous restaurant, nestled below the mountains and on the shoreline of Aurlandsfjord. Visit the unique, friendly and fun Ægir Microbrewery Pub to taste locally produced beers and aquavit. Travel on the world-famous Flam railway and through some of the most stunning fjord scenery by boat. Depending on the time of year, you can also consider skiing, hiking, or snowshoeing. A prime time to take this trip is in December, when the city of Bergen is buzzing with the anticipation of Jul; Christmas concerts, light shows and the Christmas market.
